Technical Career School for American Samoa The major excavation taking place behind the American Samoa Community College is for the new state of art Technical Career School. Speaking to KVZK News Director of Education Talauega Dr. Samasoni Asaeli says, the school will provide students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners. Career and technical education, or CTE is one of the most important parts of the modern American education system.
While it may seem like CTE has only been praised recently, it has a proven history of preparing students for high-demand careers that help them live their lives to the fullest. Director Asaeli told KVZK News one of the biggest markers of the importance of career and technical education is that American Samoa is facing a skilled labor shortage, having a Career Technical School in American Samoa is a win win for everyone. “CTE education prevents students from falling through the cracks of the education system”, said Director Asaeli. He continued, “those who may not do well in traditional classrooms can revolutionize their educational experience by just trying courses that will be offered by the CTE as these courses are offered with the goal of allowing students to learn, develop and demonstrate skills in industry modules, such as manufacturing, hospitality and office management, transportation, health care, and more”.
The focus will be on career-readiness, teaching important employability skills that are currently in high demand. Even if a student does not pursue a career at the Technical school after high school, they will be able to take these employability skills with them as they enter another field or go through college or internships. Students learning how to problem solve and use critical thinking is valuable regardless of their goals and aspirations, said Director Asaeli. The cost of the whole project is unknown. However this information will be made available sometime soon.
