ATOA O SAMOA DAY 1:ASG historical groundbreaking and welcoming reception
On October 10, 2023 (Apia Standard Time and Date), the American Samoa Government held a historic groundbreaking ceremony in Moata'a, Samoa.
This event was an extraordinary milestone in the diplomatic relations between American Samoa and Samoa, marking the establishment of the very first American Samoa Government (ASG) Office on Upolu territory.
Prominent attendees at the ceremony included the Honorable Prime Minister of Samoa, Fiame Naomi Mataafa, her esteemed cabinet members, Council of Deputies, the Former Head of State, and respected clergy from Moata'a village.
The American Samoa distinguished guests included the Senate President, Speaker of the House, District Representatives, and esteemed cabinet members.
The keynote speakers at this significant event were Governor Lemanu and Prime Minister Fiame. Their words highlighted the importance of this historic milestone and addressed pertinent concerns surrounding this project.
During his remarks, Governor Lemanu expressed the historical significance of this initiative, stating, "This project has been a long time in the making. It is a milestone achievement as a result of the previous Atoa o Samoa Executive Meeting, one that will benefit both the two Samoas.”
He added, “The groundbreaking of the new ASG land in Moata’a symbolizes our commitment to strengthen our relationship with the Independent State of Samoa economically, socially, and financially.
The groundbreaking ceremony culminated in a land swap agreement between the Government of Samoa and ASG.
This significant exchange was a milestone during the Atoa o Samoa biannual executive meeting, further solidifying the strong bond of cooperation between the two governments. The Government of Samoa hosted a reception dinner for the American Samoa Delegation at the Tanoa Hotel in Apia later in the evening.
