Dr Shumway no longer serves on Advisory Committee
The Chief Medical Officer of the hospital, Dr Joseph Shumway has been removed as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Subcommittee.
The subcommittee advises the Medical Steering Committee that is overseeing the new multimillion specialized acute care 40 bed specialty hospital to capture new medical services.
This was confirmed by Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Akapusi Ledua during an interview over the phone.
Shumway is replaced by Dr Elizabeth Lauvao, the Department of Health’s Clinical Director.
Speaking from Alaska, Dr Ledua said the decision was made solely by him and he declined to divulge his reasons.
Dr Shaumway told KVZKnews that after unanimous consensus reached by the advisory committee on the best use of the new Tafuna medical facility, there was no need for him to remain as Chair. In doing so, exited from the committee so he can focus on other significant responsibilities related to patient and safety issues at LBJ hospital.
In an email to the media earlier this month, Dr Shumway expressed disappointment when the committee’s schedule to see the Governor was canceled.
The same committee has cautioned against building the new hospital, citing that this project would fail, but in a previous Cabinet meeting Lt Governor Talauega E. V. Ale said this project will proceed as it aligns with the government's development projects, which sees the need for a new hospital in the Tafuna area.
