LBJ CMO suspended

Four months into his new position, Chief Medical Officer Dr Joseph Shumway has been suspended until further notice.

This was confirmed in a letter dated July 11, 2023, endorsed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr Akapusi Ledua.

The letter obtained by KVZK, outlined the disappointment of the Acting CEO regarding Dr Shumway’s recent conduct and public statements, which have damaged the reputation of the Hospital, the Department of Health and the American Samoa Government.

KVZK News contacted Dr Shumway for comments but has been unsuccessful as of press time.

Dr Ledua noted that Dr Shumway accused the American Samoa Government of attempted theft of Federal funds, which is defamatory and below the standard of conduct expected for the hospital’s CMO.

He said Dr Shumway’s behaviour shows a lack of respect for the health sector. As such, a decision has been made to proceed with his suspension effective yesterday, July 11, 2023, and will remain in effect until further notice.

The Acting CEO urged Dr Shumway to reconsider his actions and reconcile his behavior befitting the Chief Medical Officer of LBJ, given the defamatory nature of his public statements.

Dr Shumway has been told that he can appeal the disciplinary action by the LBJ management.
