Samoa Bowl 2023 volleyball tournament wraps up

The Samoa Bowl 2023 volleyball tournament concluded, highlighting the determination of participating teams, especially the impressive performances of young female athletes striving for victory.


Teams fiercely competed in challenging playoff matches, leading to an intense championship between the Midwest and West Coast teams.


The Midwest Team claimed victory, securing the top spot and leaving the West Coast with a well-deserved second place.


Following these matches, a closing ceremony honored outstanding players and was led by the Department of Youth and Women’s Affairs (DYWA) Director, Dr. Salote Aoelua-Fanene. She acknowledged the Department of Education for their support and emphasized the tournament's fa'asamoa spirit—fostering friendships, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Gratitude was extended to coaches for their efforts in team preparation and safety.


Notable achievements were recognized among standout players:


● Best Blocker: Malinah Purcell-Telefoni (Westcoast)

● Best Outside Hitter: Suli Davis (Midwest)

● Best Right-Side Hitter: Tautiale Fale (Taupou)

● Best Setter: Abigayle Falefia (Midwest)

● Best Libero: Shady Faalii (Midwest)

● Best Offensive Player: Mohanihokuao Misipeka (Midwest)

● Best Defensive Player: Kailani Afatia (Tausala)

● Best Sportsmanship: Legna Seuteni (Tausala)

● Honorable Player: Madison Mulipola (West)

● MVP Tournament: Cha’lei Reid (West)

● MVP Championship Game: Suli Davis (Midwest)

● Coach of the Samoa Bowl Volleyball Tournament: Toa Gaisoa


These student athletes showcased not only exceptional skill but also a commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play. Sepi Iuta Tonga Davis, leading the Midwest team, presented generous donations, including duffle bags, jerseys, knee pads, sports shoes, spandex, and totes of shoes for each high school, promoting and encouraging local girls to continue with the sport.


Dr. Roxanne Salave’a, Deputy Director of the Department of Education, delivered final remarks, expressing gratitude for the girls showcasing their talent and thanking Sepi Davis and the Midwest team for their generous donations to our American Samoa student athletes.


The Samoa Bowl is a platform for fostering sportsmanship, camaraderie, and athletic excellence.


Congratulations to Teams Midwest, Tausala, Taupou, and West Coast on their participation in the Samoa 2023 Volleyball tournament.
